A case of acute encephalitis following Japanese B encephalitis vaccination

Abstract
An eight-year-old girl was vaccinated against Japanese Bencephalitis on 19 May 1994. That night, she presented high fever. On 30 May 1994, she had generalized tonic-clonic seizure for 40 min and loss of consciousness, and so she was admitted to
our
hospital. On admission, she was semicomatous, but she had no meningeal sign. Blood sugar and electrolyte were normal, but CSF protein was increased to 82mg/dl with mild pleocytosis only. Serum cold agglutinin titer was increased to 1:1024 and
mycoplasma. Antibody titier was increased from 1:640 to 1:2560 on ninth day of admission. Cranial CT showed no remarkable change. EEG showed generalized high voltage slow waves. She was diagnosed as acute encephalitis, and so she was treated with
phenytoin and phenobarbital, mannitol, ventilator care. On 3rd June, consciousness was recovered without complication. This acute encephalitis was suspected to be due to the Japanese B encephalitis vaccination. but mycoplasma encephalitis was not
ruled
out.
